I love Smartphones. Used to be, I was jealous of everyone who had one. And I couldn’t grasp why some people kept pulling them out every five seconds, no matter where they were or whom they were with. Well, they definitely are addictive! I learned that as soon as I got one myself. I rely on it now not just for phoning, of course, but for messaging, email, directions, maps, calendars, calculators, news, and web surfing, not to mention games. Right now, my older daughter is clinging to mine for dear life, playing Angry Birds. How did this happen?

One of the saddest things about my iPhone is that its shiny glass face got scratched within one week of ownership. It hadn’t quite dawned on me how fragile the glass surface is. I put it in a purse next to some keys and voila, deep grooves resulted that bug me even now. My husband suffered the sad fate of dropping his and cracking the glass, necessitating replacement. These babies need to be babied!

That’s why I created some iPhone cozies for two friends. I wanted to sew them a gift they could use, especially when they travel or take public transportation, and I knew they enjoyed their “eyePhuns” (as one friend called hers). I adapted a pattern from The New Handmade to fit an iPhone in its plastic shell snugly, and I made sure to leave an opening on the top–on one side of the closure/tab–so that earphones can fit through. That way, you can listen to music even while protecting your precious smartphone from harm as you travel along.

I simply used small pieces of fabric, some batting, and sewed this together. Then I sewed on a velcro closure. I did not quilt the layers first, but that would be another way to do this; the piece is so small that it wasn’t really necessary here.
